An interview is one of the first steps in the process of starting an internship. The interview gives you an opportunity to make a great first impression, but there are some things you will want to know before joining the call. Here are some of our tips to help you prepare for an interview.

1. Research is key

Research the company before your interview to have a good understanding of what the company does. If you know who is interviewing you, research them too. You can even connect with your interviewer on LinkedIn if you want to show that you are taking the time to do your research.

2. Check your internet connection, video and audio before the interview

All Anglo interviews take place before you arrive in the UK, so interviews will be taking place over the phone or platforms like Zoom. If your interview takes place on a video call like Zoom, make sure that your background is clean and professional.

3. Dress for the position

Even though you might be interviewing from your home, you should not wear t-shirts or loungewear for your interview. Take time to consider what you should be wearing based on the company, because the way you should dress may differ based on industry. Your research on the company from the first tip will help. Are there any pictures of the team on the company’s website? Use their outfits for inspiration. In England, it is more common for professionals to dress smart rather than in a full suit.

4. Prepare a few questions for during the interview

An interview is not just an opportunity for the company to get to know you, it is also an opportunity for you to get to know the company. Asking questions shows that you did your research on the company and are interested in the position.

Tip:  Be sure to actively listen during the interview so you don’t ask a question that has already been answered.

5. Send a short email after the interview to thank your interviewer

Not only is this considered polite, but it also keeps you fresh in the interviewer’s mind. Try to personalize this email with anything you learnt about your interviewer during the interview.
